Here’s the patch they were talking about fixing. They just released it a few minutes ago. Here’s the notes for the new TF2 patch:
Updates to Team Fortress 2 have been released. The updates will be applied automatically when your Steam client is restarted. The specific changes include:
Team Fortress 2
- Fixed Ambassador not using hitboxes to trace against players. It now works like all other bullet-firing weapons in the game
- Fixed Ambassador shooting through gates
- Fixed Ambassador not critting during the round win period
- Fixed control point not being named correctly on Arena Sawmill
- Fixed cloaked Spies being able to taunt attack
- Fixed Spy feign death not being reflected in scoreboard
- Fixed Jarate effect on DX8 machines
- Fixed rare crash in Spy “A Cut Above” achievement
- Fixed the backpack icon appearing over the “Could not connect to Steam” message in the client inventory
- Fixed German localization string for respawning players showing %1
So much has happened to Team Fortress 2 in the last 24 hours. Quite a lot of people really like the new update and weapon unlocking system. Others can’t stand not having control over how they gain their weapons in TF2.
All hope is not lost! For those who want control over their weapon unlocks they still have the chance to complete the previous class milestones to gain their weapons. The Medic, Pyro, Heavy and Scout can all still gain their weapons through completing the achievements up to the milestone markers.
While Sniper and Spy weapons are still achieved randomly through a system Valve has not released, you can still gain your old weapons through achievements. All of this could change or stay the same. Valve could very well decide that you can either simply spend time playing and randomly get your weapons or choose to do them through achievements.
They could very well pull the plug completely on the previous classes’ ability to gain them through achievements. Since Valve has not made an official statement yet we will have to wait and see.
If you don’t want to randomly gain your weapons or you want to get them now before Valve changes the system again you can do so very easily with our LiTi-4 Weapon Unlock Achievement Guide.
Hopefully the system will stay so that new players have the chance to gain weapons through either system. Chances are that Valve will change the system in the future in some way. Only time will really tell.

It seems that Valve pulled another fast one on all of us. Not only did they release two classes with this update by making us think only the Sniper was getting updated but they also made it so that all weapons are now randomly unlocked.
Refer to the General section at the bottom of this post. This has caused major upset in the TF2 community. The same reason people don’t like the random criticals in game is the same reason they don’t like random weapons.
Players want control over their game play. Not many people enjoy having a very random element of luck added to their game.
We can only assume that Valve was upset at the “achievement farmers” and this is why they took away the old system. If that’s the case then they need to just give players their weapons during the update instead of making it random.
Both systems make players work for their weapons. With the new system players have no control over what they get. You could never play Spy but love to play Medic and get all Spy unlocks.
The old system allowed players to unlock what they wanted as they wanted. It would be a lot easier to simply give the weapons away for free during the update or make a system that gives players some control.
We’ll see tomorrow if Valve makes a post about this update and how things are going to stay or go.
